“Equal rights for women, equal rights for women”

We hear about protests and walks held all over the world to demand equal rights for women. The point to ponder over here is “rights equal to what?”. A logical answer that we hear is “rights equal to men” or that “men and women should have equal rights”. From this one thing is clear that women all over the world demand rights equal to men.

Here in Pakistan women are demanding equality in opportunity and representation in parliament, jobs etc etc. But when we say “equal rights for men and women” we also mean that men should have rights equal to women. Instead of going on a higher level to see if equal rights are being practiced lets keeps this discussion to what we see and experience in everyday life.

Scenario 1

A bank. Long queue. All men. And suddenly the door opens and a woman enters. Passing by the queue as if it was never there, she goes straight to the counter. The guy at the counter acts the same way and ignoring the long queue that has been there for hours he takes the bills from the lady and returns her the receipt. The people in the queue keep protesting but the guy at the counter calmly replies

“khatoon hain” (she was a woman)

Where did the equal rights and the demand for them go all of a sudden?! What about the people in the queue that have been standing there for hours? Wasn’t it their right to pay the bills first?

The same biased attitude is seen at all counters.

Scenario 2

Economics class in a university. The same old boring lecture being delivered by the teacher with full enthusiasm. As usual the students busy in their own stuff. The teacher notices a student teasing the other and the other punching him back. He screams at them and kicks them both out of the class. Five minutes later two girls of the same class discussing their crushes and giggling. The teacher ignores once. Twice. Thrice. And then…!!!

“beta, aise nai karain buri baat, shukriya!” (please don’t do this, thank you!)

Why?! Weren’t they supposed to be kicked out too for disturbing the class?! Where did the equal rights go?!

The same biased attitude can be observed at the start of the class when students come late.

Why do you think a teacher that treats both the genders equally is hated by women? Because these teachers don’t treat them like VIPs.

Scenario 3

A “Noori” concert. A hardcore fan hears of it and calls the given phone number to inquire about the tickets. The guy at the other end gives all the details and in the end states “this concert is only for GIRLS and couples”.

Wtf!!! “This concert is only for couples” is fair but where did the GIRLS come in from?! Are they some superior creature that a guy can’t enter the arena without being accompanied by one of them?!

Where did the equal rights go?!

The above three examples are only three of the many examples where men face injustice daily. Equal rights have to be established in daily life before being implemented on the level that women demand.

Do you see the catch here? Zip it where the women are being treated as VIPs and go out in protest wherever there is a chance to grab a little more of the favors.

I am sure you all have seen these “equal rights” protests. What do you see?

Women coming straight from beauty parlors to protest? Wearing those branded shades and arriving in driver driven cars? Carrying those 30k cell phones and afterwards going to Marriott to celebrate the success of the protest? What rights are they talking about? The right to leave their children alone at home while they go about attending these social gatherings labeled as “protests”? The right to leave their husbands at the mercy of servants for lunch?

I am sure a lot of you are thinking about the rights that women are deprived of. Let me state some of them for you.

1.	Right to do work and earn willingly.

2.	Right to education.

3.	Right to go out with friends.

4.	Right to be treated equally at the workplace.

5.	Right to be not teased and followed.

These usually are the main demands in these protests, right?

The first three points are anyone’s private family problems. There are women and girls who study, who work and who go out with friends. If there is a restriction on your leaving home, discuss it at your place. Why road when you have your dad or brother at home to discuss these problems with? Do u go out protesting about your arguments at home? No!

The fourth point is pretty valid. But there is a reason for it. Can women stay at the office after their routine office hours? Can they stay at the office for night duties? No. So care is taken and they are assigned the jobs that they can afford to perform. The same reason goes for all the practical jobs which have a lower percentage of women.

Point five is also valid. There always are good and bad people in the society. Doing of one person can’t be put on all. But the major reason for it in my opinion is as follows. Simple. The more unique the thing, the more it attracts attention. The more women try to hide from the society, the more the society will chase them. Why is “Cinepax” the center of attention of the twin cities? Because it is the only cinema in 400 km radius! Get it?

Yet there are women who do jobs, then come home to serve their families. They themselves teach their children. They themselves do all the household chores. They manage all the grocery and even go to market to get them. Yet we don’t hear them talk about “being deprived of rights”. We just hear them talking about “doing their duties”. They don’t fancy going out for those social gathering labeled as “equality of rights protests”. They would rather spend time with their families and keep the family together. These women include my mom and your mom. These are the women who deserve a break. These are the women who deserve the right to be assisted.

Before I start off let me clarify that these are merely my views. I have been a regular follower of Pakistani music over the years and these in my opinion are the most under-rated musicians from Pakistan.

5. Rage (Band)

Rage

Remember the soundtrack of drama serial “Aashiana” which took the country by storm? Nobody knew who’s song was it but everybody was singing it. Rage was the name of the band that produced the melodious track but they never received their due recognition. The last album they released was titled “Deewana”. The video for “Chand se chehron pe” from the new album was released and it was an instant hit. Another video that was released was titled “Deewana” which wasn’t received well by the public. This was the last that we saw of them. Their album “Deewana” is available on the internet as a proof of their talent.

4. Shiraz Uppal

A composer and a singer, Shiraz Uppal came into the spot light with the track “Tera te mera” which was an instant hit and it made his album “Tera te mera” sell well. Many of us dont know that this was his second album. The first album titled “Tu hai meri” didn’t do well. His third album “Jhuki Jhuki” was again a hit. He then went on to sing for an Indian movie and is currently collaborating with A.R Rehman on some tracks. The melodious nature of his songs make them all listen able unlike other musicians where u skip tracks. Despite all the success, he still is under-rated and has failed to carve a permanent name for himself in the music industry. He certainly is one of the highly talented but under-rated musicians of our country.

3. Jimmy Attre

Jimmy Attre

Hated by many for one reason or the other but no one can deny that this musician has a classy voice. He broke into the music scene with two back to back videos of “Zamana nazuk hai” and “Tere naal nachna” from the album “Zamana Nazuk hai”. His songs and videos got mixed responses but the quality of composition and the way the songs were sung showed his talent. He later came into spotlight again, this time with a “Humd” which left many in awe. He has been out of the scene ever since but is a pure example of undeniable talent which is left unappreciated.

2. Mizraab (Band)

Mizraab

Spearheaded by an internationally renowned guitarist, Faraz Anwar, the band was formed in late 90s. The band basically produced progressive-rock music which was a target of continuous criticism. Mizraab released an incomplete album titled “Panchi” which due to its incompleteness didn’t do well amongst the public. 2004 saw them releasing their album “Maazi haal aur mustaqbil” to much criticism and critical acclaim. Their videos “Panchi” and “Kitni Sadian” received a lot of airtime on music channels. But it was clear from the response that the masses weren’t ready to accept the kind of music that Mizraab was producing. They released the video “Ujalon main” in 2007 with a new line-up. This track saw Mizraab change their genre and it was well received all over the country. In 2009 Faraz Anwar moved to England thus disbanding Mizraab. This is an example of a highly talented band whose genre wasn’t acceptable to the masses.

1. Karavan (Band)

Karavan

Yes! Karavan! The brain-child of one of the leading guitarists and ex-Awaz member Assad Ahmed, Karavan consisted of Assad Ahmed on guitars, Najam Shiraz on vocals and Sameer Ahmed on bass. Popular in the younger generation for their classic rock sound, Karavan released their first album titled “Rakh Aas” in 1997. Their second album followed which was titled “Safar”. Najam Sheraz left the band soon after and Tanseer Dar took over as the new vocalist. They released their brilliant third album “Gardish” in 2002 which contained gems like “Agay hi agay”, “Gardish” and “Dil ki pyaas”. It was an instant hit amongst the younger generation of the country. Karavan is known for its electrifying live performances and considered one of the best live acts in the country. Despite having a strong fan following Karavan is under-rated when you talk of the masses. Assad Ahmed and Tanseer Dar make a deadly combination and are a must listen for everyone.

no, u cant fly. no, u cant run like flash. no, u cant lift trucks. but yes! u can be a hero!

we start imagining about superman and spiderman wen v hear da word “hero” (some might also think of Shaan wid dat curling mustache of his) but dictionary shows that hero means

“A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life.”

this is what i believe in n this is how u n i can become heroes!

how?

v find ourselves in “potential hero making” situations daily. u dun c them? that is because u n i are too selfish to see them. selfish about our respect, our rights, out freedom, our life. true! these things are dearer to one than anything else but the one who overcomes this selfishness can become a real hero.

ok… what situations?

the situation where you have to make a choice. a choice between right n wrong. a choice between good n evil. a choice between the easier but a path of lies and the harder path which gives u inner satisfaction ultimately.

these choices can come in all shapes.

these can be as simple as taking a blame for something that you have done and saving many innocents from the punishment that u deserve.

or putting your own life on the line to save someone else’s.

just think of ur last week. how many times did someone else get punished for your doing and u didnt standup to save him/her n take the blame?

how many times did u get a chace to help someone out but thought dat u had better stuff to do?

how many times did u get a chance to save a life? yes! save a life! just by donating blood or simply helping someone cross the road. these are small things but have we ever thought that these small things can save lives? NO! because v are too selfish to look beyond our own gains.

Not only self sacrifice bt also having da courage to put oneself on the line to achieve greater objectives puts one in the same situation. greater objective maybe for the betterment of the community, country or even the world.

does one always succeed?

the answer is no. u might not succeed in saving all the innocents by standing up for ur doing. u might not succeed in helping someone out wid his problem. u might not succeed in saving someone’s life or for the worse even lose your own in the process. u mite totally fail in accomplishing these tasks. BUT!!! one thing u will not fail at is becoming a hero! the courage to step up to the task. the courage to hold your ground for what u believe is right and the courage to accept that u r losing nw bt only for a greater gain is what makes u stand out of the crowd. u may not be a hero for the world or ur country or even for the neighbourhood but at least for that single person who gains from your sacrifice, you are “hero”.

this is how heros are made. thinkin less of oneself and more of others. thinking less of impossible and more of possible. thinking less of ME and more of US.

think over it… is it dat difficult to be a hero?

so, what have u done lately to be called a “hero”?

I am fed up of her…. i cant take her anymore… she eats ma brain all da time….

these are some very common dialogues that u hear from ur friends who are in relationships. ever wondered why all of ur lovestruck friends say the same dialogues???

i ll give u my ideas on it. as they say “excess of everything is bad”. whether it be food or sleep, work or rest. we need to have a balance in everything. that is how God has made human beings. same goes in relationships.

by balance i mean the level of attention or affection should be equal from both sides. by balance i also mean that the level of affection should be maintained to a middle level. remember, “excess of everything is bad”

lets explore the meaning of balance here.

generally the case is not ideal i.e balanced. the feelings from both sides arent equal. in the start, the affection from one side overgrows . when dis happens, it pushes the other back. it doesnt initally affect the person who has dis sudden overgrowth of feelings for the other person. but what happens and what i mean by “pushes the other back” is that the other person starts to take the feelings and the relationship for granted. he knows now that no matter what happens he has dis unconditional supply of attention and love. this stage is often referred to in urdu as ” bachi phas gai” or ” bacha tunn hogaya”. when this stage is reached the receiver of the attention starts to mould the relationship in his own way. he/she has other important stuff to do and has less time and less attention for the relationship. the person with the overgrown heart n feelings now feels neglected and so rise conflicts and suspicions. and if dis problem is not solved on emergency basis disaster is inevitable.

so v conclude that the imbalance of affection on both sides leads to disasters. and this only happens when level of affection form one side overgrows suddenly resulting in decrease of feelings on the other side.

wht to do?

keep a balance!

1. u ll always know when the balance is not being maintained, dun overlook it.

2. if u sense ur partner is moving away from u, take a step back.

3. point 2 will make ur partner move towards you himself/herself.

4. in case of 2, if u grow ur feelings to compensate for ur partner’s lost feelings u are doomed.

5. if u feel ur partner is all over u, tell him/her to take a step back.

6. in case of point 5, dun move away from ur partner or its gonna end badly.

remember!!

talking to ur partner is the best way to maintain balance. let him/her know of ur feelings about the relationship and give an ear to his/her too.

keep balance!
